Book Review
This book is aimed at any competent reader who wants to help a willing learner to read. Its claim is that to learn to read “the two of you just need this book and a couple of hours a week for a few months.” It is set out very clearly and with detailed guidelines and explanations in the opening chapter.
Tips are provided to make the sessions move along and to keep the learner motivated, and the emphasis is on maintaining a relaxed, friendly and can do atmosphere. No prior knowledge is required as the book begins right at the beginning, using pictures for letter sounds.
By the end of the book the reader is tackling sentences such as “The wreckfish lives down at the bottom of the sea” and has learnt many of the basic rules of reading. The book concludes with some quotations from well known people with dyslexia and with a list of other famous people who struggled with literacy.
This book will appeal to anyone who wants to learn to read or help someone else to read in a way which will not make the learner feel belittled, stupid or babyish. It is presented in a simple, but effective format which is structured to deliver success and to minimise and address errors.
This book would be particularly useful for adolescents or adults.
